Found this place online when looking for coffee shops with latte art. Met TJ the owner when we walked in and he greeted us. He then came by and chatted with us while we enjoyed our drinks. Super hands on/engaging owner which we love to see! The vibe is relaxed and comfortable. My husband got the hot chocolate and said it was the best one he’s had at a shop before! I loved the lavender matcha latte. Highly recommend plus free parking near by.

I absolutely love this place. I like to call Northern Vessel my home away from home. I try and stop in once or twice a week, and it's usually the highlight of my day. I love the vibes, and it's such a fun place to get my work done. While I consider myself a regular now, all of the staff knew me by name within a week of the shop's opening. NV staff work hard to make every drink perfect, and they are so kind, attentive and positive. If something needs to be addressed (whether the coffee order isn't right, if they're low on paper towels in the bathroom or the water is low), they will always make sure to resolve any of these issues promptly. I never feel like a burden asking for something there.I also appreciate the diversity of drink options on the menu, and I am continuously floored by the quality of the coffee. I haven't stepped foot in a Starbucks in months because I keep coming back for their high quality coffee and great hospitality. Thank you for all the amazing coffee, NV team!

Phenomenal coffee. Had both of their single origin pour-overs, both excellent. Even stopped by a third time on my way to the airport. Love the glass reclamation project - glass is easily my preferred coffee vehicle so getting a glass jar to GO?? With a koozie to keep it warm? Perfect for a walk around the sculpture garden. Had three different baristas, all wonderful and knowledgeable. Will be back every time in Des Moines - no question.

Atmosphere is perfect for a coffee date and together with friends.Lastly, their to-go cups are in glass mason jars, rather than the disposable coffee cups and they offer a discount on your next order if you return the mason jars.Shop that needs to be checked out if visiting or local.

This place was exceptional in every sense of the word. Every new coffee place I go to, I look for this level of quality and skill and I'm almost always disappointed. But Horizon Line is superb. The homemade scones were better than any I've had outside of my mom's kitchen. The coffee was perfectly brewed and the homemade flavors made the difference. Vibes were impeccable, Perfect to study or meet with a friend. Very friendly and patient staff and I can't wait to come back.

One of my favorite coffee shops! Very happy with the variety of great coffee options available that aren't overly sweet! The Figgy-o-latte that I tried last year has been my favorite those far but you can't go wrong with a chai or one of their specialty lattes. There are some pastries and baked goods, in addition to a few refrigerated salads, sides, etc.The vibe of the place is very sunny and laid-back. Very light background music, plenty of tables and outlets, pieces by local artists for sale, and walls that don't echo make this a great place for remote working or a small meetup with friends on the weekend. There is 2-hour street parking right outside and a small lot on the south side of the building.

I was here last summer, so it was nice to come back. The service and atmosphere is great! I specifically remember the pleasant staff, atmosphere, and local artwork!!! They had this awesome Gold Retriever work.Super chill and definitely worth a visit!

This is a very relaxing coffee shop. This family friendly environment had many tables for whatever your party size. The back had a large bookshelf filled to browse during your visit. They sold bakery items in cases in the front along with coffee beans, mugs, and other small items.I got the cold brew with their house made almond syrup, which was very good. I would recommend stopping in if you need a chill place to sit and work or relax.

Drew made the best americano I've ever had! It tasted like it was a good pour over. We enjoy seeking out new coffee shops and this was quite a find. I'm glad we chose this place to stop at on our drive from Minneapolis to KC. My wife was looking for a coffee shop and this one (reviews) stood out. The space is inviting and comfortable. It used to be a hardware store and you can still see isle numbers on the wood floors. What stood out for me, besides the good coffee, was how engaging the owner was with the customers. No wonder I noticed a 'Entrepreneur of the Year' award while looking around. I will definitely return the next time we're passing through Des Moines.

We went here to try their breakfast and drinks for the first time. The counter server was nice and very helpful in explaining what certain items were, as their menu doesn't list ingredients for the different named food items. The general atmosphere of the place was also good.Unfortunately, their products just weren't that good. My wife and I both tried different sandwich items, and while they sounded great, they put so many green onions on them that it was all you could really taste on mine, and my wife said her sandwich was too oniony as well, though not quite as much as mine.Additionally, I got a hot chocolate with white chocolate in place of the sugar so it would be sweeter, but it was still quite bitter. My wife got a mint mocha drink as well, and she said both the mint and mocha flavors were extremely mild and just not that good. While I suspect their regular coffee is good for people who enjoy coffee, what we got just didn't live up to the expectations we had based on prices. I wouldn't likely go here again.

We were driving through Des Moines and were searching for a coffee shop - Zanzibar's stood out as a great place to try and we were so glad we stopped here!! Incredible mocha breve and sweet cream coffee - my only regret is that I didn't order multiples!! The flavor of the beans were crafted and curated so well - I wish we lived closer because this place would be a staple for us if we lived in the Des Moines area. Oh, and did I mention the banana bread?? Seriously amazing - some of the best I've ever had - great flavor, wasn't dry, and a substantial sized slice. The place was packed out too, so you knew from the start that it was a great place. The baristas were focused yet friendly and I felt comfortable asking questions if needed. I decided to try this place because I like trying new coffee places… this was a mistake here. I took my time figured out what I wanted, the cashier was eager to end our interaction when I hadn’t finished ordering. She did not read the order back or make sure that everything by was correct. When asked what size for my boyfriend’s hot latte he said 12oz. When we got the coffee it was an 8oz coffee; don’t know why you would bother asking if it won’t matter. Then we got our food. My boyfriend got the space egg and asked to add bacon; there was no bacon added and there was multiple HAIRS on the sandwich. It took them 30 minutes to make my bacon egg and cheese bagel; it also had hair on the plate. I decided to give it a try and found a hair after my first bite. Over all just a bad experience. The workers aren’t required to have their hair back or in a net when working with food. And the coffee was subpar

The coffee is delicious and the staff are friendly and patient while you make a decision of what to order. I just wish there were more gluten free or non-bread food options.

The coffee was very good. The seasonal special of Sagittarius was so unique with a pear and smokey taste. The breakfast sandwiches are basic but okay, just had simple bread and no additional flavors inside.

The baristas were very friendly and patient while also being very knowledgeable. They have a wide variety of specialty drinks along with all the classics. They display local artists' work on the walls for sale as well. Love a local business that is willing to support other locals!

Love the drink specials here. I got a tea latté and a Virgo which is a Cortado with black sesame syrup. My boyfriend got a drip coffee and it tasted pretty watered-down and acidic. If you're looking for flavored coffee, this is the place. If you want straight up espresso or regular coffee, go somewhere else.

Chain and spoke is so cute! I got a shot, cortado and an iced lavender latte. The total was $14.58. Honestly the coffee is totally worth the price!! The space had plenty of seating and big tables so you could do some work. The baristas and bike shop employees were incredibly nice and welcoming to all the customers. My only complaint was that the cortado was a little too hot.

Love the space! It's modern, clean, kind of industrial, and wide open with a touch of quirkiness. We got their seasonal Cinnamon Maple Latté, regular hot latté, and a shot of espresso. Their default milk is oat milk. Love that!Their espresso machine is shut down at 3pm every day so keep that in mind when you visit. After 3pm they offer cold brew and drip coffees if I'm not mistaken. The espresso was fantastic! You'll first notice the bold aroma. At first glance, you'll see that the espresso has good crema which indicates that the coffee is of superior quality and ground properly. The espresso was flavorful and robust, as the smell suggested it would be. The beans are roasted nearby in Winterset. I'm always happy to support local! What I love most is the process by which their coffee beans are decaffeinated...Banana! Ethyl acetate is a NATURAL caffeine extractor found in various fruits and vegetables such as banana. I believe the banana is used in the direct solvent method of decaffeination. A lot of you might not drink decaf, but I absolutely love coffee yet cannot have more than one cup/shot of regular espresso without experiencing some A-fib. A good decaf bean is difficult to find so I'm glad that Chain & Spoke are giving this their attention. I never trust a coffee shop that doesn't know how their beans are decaffeinated! For non-coffee drinkers, they offer a line of canned sparkling botanical teas.Really cool that they also have a bike shop in the back of the space. I'm not a cyclist but it's cool that you can buy some gear or have your bike repaired while sipping on a good cup o' Joe!Add this to your list of must-tries!

Chain & Spoke Coffee is an amazing coffee shop experience that I can't recommend enough. The expertly crafted Espresso and smooth, refreshing cold brew drinks are top-notch, and the friendly and knowledgeable staff make the experience even better. The ambiance is warm and inviting, with big windows providing natural light and a comfortable space for relaxing or working. One unique aspect of Chain & Spoke Coffee is the on-site bike repair shop. This practical setup allows you to enjoy your coffee while your bike is being repaired by the skilled and knowledgeable staff. It's a convenient and fun twist to the coffee shop experience, and makes Chain & Spoke Coffee a must-visit for those who love both cycling and coffee. Overall, if you're looking for a unique and enjoyable coffee shop experience, Chain & Spoke Coffee is the place to go.
