Best Steam Powered Maker
This is the best “steam powered” espresso-type maker I’ve used, especially at the introductory price that seems to no longer be found.It makes 4 small cups.True espresso machines pump water at a specific temperature & pressure, resulting in individual small cups, sometimes with a foamy “crema.” Those machines require a fine grind for true espresso.This type of machine uses a coarser grind, as a fine grind can clog it. In many ways it works the same as those stove-top mokka pots where you put water in the bottom and it is forced to the top.This unit heats pretty fast and has a temperature display to help you avoid the dreaded superheated steam that spoils an otherwise pretty good cup of strong coffee. Switching off blocks the flow, but I find unplugging it 3/4 of the way up the temperature dial (at about three cups) helps with a “soft landing” with no overheating.The company seems to claim it has some kind of temperature regulation, but the description is often found on other models, including “removeable water tank” which does not exist.Again, for those adding cream and sugar or just wanting a strong cup, you should like it.If you want to pull single shots with crema, you will want to spend a bit more for a real pump machine.Do note that the company logo, motto, web site and email address are permanently and prominently printed on the side of the machine! Probably not wedding gift material, as it talks about great quality at half the price.
