Good for Those Who May Move Abroad

In buying a coffee grinder, I opted to go non-electric, as I may eventually move to another country where the voltage differs and US electrical appliances won’t work. Having done this before, I had to leave many items behind that I am now having to replace, having returned to the States. This grinder, so far, works well, though I am still having to figure out the right coarseness for my French press. The one downside is that it takes longer than the reviews stated to grind 4 Tablespoons of grounds needed for my morning pot. Rather than the 2 minutes quoted, I found that it takes twice as long. Since I am not much of a morning person until I’ve had some coffee, I have found it works best to grind the next mornings batch the night before. Not the optimal arrangement, as the sooner the coffee is ground, it seems the fresher the coffee, but it is working for me.This grinder has a 2 year warranty, but then the directions state the burr grinding mechanism may be worn down and require replacement. I have no idea how much that may cost. My last electric grinder was going on 8 years old when I had to leave it behind in the States. I am a bit disappointed to anticipate having to do this within a few years, and I hope that the price is reasonable to replace the burrs. The grinder is very compact and attractively designed. I have some arthritis in my hands, but using this grinder has not put any undue stress or caused pain in my hands. The grinder is easy to use; it just takes longer than I anticipated. Overall, so far, I am satisfied with my purchase. We’ll see how I feel in 2 years, should I have to replace the burrs and find out their cost!

    Very Convenient!

I purchased this Manual Stainless Steel Coffee Grinder as a gift for my daughter-in-law and she loves it! Although she uses it regularly at home, the best thing she likes about it is that it is easy to take along when they go camping to freshly grind their coffee grounds for their morning coffee! She says it it easy to use and appreciates the adjustable settings according to what kinds of coffee beans are being used. The stainless steel is strong and will ensure that it will last a long time compared to one that would be a hard plastic. Not only do I recommend this, but my daughter-in-law does too!

I was really hoping for greatness…

Maybe, I’m not used to hand crank grinders…? And, maybe, the problem that I have with this grinder is standard fair witha ll hand crank grinders…?I have a grinder at home that I use, but I recently bought a portable hand espresso maker and thought that I should get a portable grinder. Doing my research, I saw that this was the one to get.It does a good job at the grind. I just need to figure out how to properly adjust the grind through trial and error and that is fine.My biggest complaint is the bottom portion of this grinder. I wish that there was a way to tighten the bottom receiving container to the grinding portion of this device. The two pieces just slip together. I’ve used this grinder multiple times in the past several days and each time, I’ve always had to readjust and retighten the bottom portion to the top during my grinding process. The last time that I used it, I put saran wrap around it and the two pieces stayed together without a problem!I think what I’ll have to do is store what beans that I’d use on the go in saran wrap and then use the saran wrap to make sure that both parts stay tightly together. In my personal opinion, this product would be great if the two portions either screwed together of attached together in a way that they don’t slip apart easily.ADDENDUM- 1.2.17- The CEO of the company contacted me and I had responded. They were on this like crazy and and fixed the situation ASAP! I’m bumping my 3 star rating to 5 stars just based on the customer service!!! You’ve earned a customer and supporter for life! Thanks Raj!!!!!

Great Product – Phenomenal Customer Service!

I don’t normally leave reviews of products I buy on Amazon, but there’s a specific reason why I am writing a review for this product that you’ll find out about shortly. In the meantime, here’s a brief list of pros vs cons on this product!Pros:-Works great for the Aeropress using a somewhat “fine” course setting with the conical burr just about touching the inside burrs-While it does take a full 1-2 minutes to grind an Aeropress scoop worth of beans, it requires very minimal effort-Built-in window is a nice add-on-Relatively easy to clean-Oddly enough, it fits perfectly into the hollow part of the Aeropress plunger for easy transportationCons:-This product is basically the same design as all the other hand grinders available on Amazon, with the same inherent design flaws-As with all hand grinders, the grind you get for your coffee is never 100% consistent-Plastic piece that sits inside the conical burr is very prone to breakage *****SEE BELOW*****Okay, now for the important part! While I cannot speak for the other companies that sell basically the same product, JavaPresse sets themselves apart for their PHENOMENAL customer service! The aforementioned plastic piece inside the conical burr on mine broke after only two months of multiple grinds per day usage. After contacting JavaPresse about my broken burr using their website, I received an email back from them in literally ten to fifteen minutes asking for my address to send me a whole replacement grinder. The person who responded also told me they were going to be releasing an upgraded burr with a nylon insert that would be available within the week.I responded with my address, thanked them for their prompt service and also asked them to alert me when the upgraded burr was available. In response not only did they send me a whole new grinder, but they had just received these upgraded burrs and sent them to me as well!!!! To say I was blown away by the immediate, prompt, and efficient response to my issues with this product is an understatement. Its not often you see or hear of customer service like this anymore!

    Amazing Company, Amazing Grinder

This is such an amazing product! I truly love this grinder, and have used it every morning since receiving it. When I bought it, I thought it’d take too much time that it’d only be used once in a while or on mornings when I have extra time. Instead, I love that it reminds me to slow down and appreciate the time and effort that goes into each cup of coffee. It’s small and compact, has an attractive design, and is very easy to clean. If you take the time to go to their website (they give you the link) there’s an incredible amount of information available to you. It tells you how many “clicks”, or turns for the grind setting of each size, suggested brewing styles to accompany them, and their descriptions. The company, JavaPresse, is just as amazing as the grinder. I usually HATE when you buy something and then your mailbox fills up with coupons or “leave feedback” or just useless junk mail. I would highly recommend signing up for the emails, because they are so useful and inspiring. Raj, the Founder & CEO, will send emails after you’ve received the grinder, or any other product I’d assume, to check in and see how it’s working for you. They’ll have incredibly useful information like “The Ultimate Guide to Espresso/Aeropress/Pour Over/Cold Brew/French Press”.The reason I’m taking the time to write such a great review is because of two emails: One of them was about why he completely revolutionized his morning routine, and then other about why he created this company. They were both so inspiring and wonderful and such a welcome change from company emails. I believe that Raj, and the entire JavaPress company, truly care about their customers and their products. I don’t usually leave reviews like this (or even review at all most times), but I absolutely LOVE this grinder and this company and believe this is standard all companies should have.

A great product backed up by outstanding customer service !

I roast my own coffee and have been using a hand burr grinder everyday for the past two years with good results for my pour-over brewing. My wife has been buying a dark roast from Starbucks and having them grind a month’s worth at a time for her espresso machine, and I recently had her try a roast I roast I did for her ground fresh on my hand grinder, and she loved it. Changing the settings back and forth on my hand grinder was too cumbersome, so we decided to get a new grinder just for her, and I’m so glad I decided on the JavaPresse. After an initial cleaning per the comprehensive instructions and on-line videos provided, I set the burr at five clicks and got a perfect espresso grind. I love all of the obvious attention that went into the design of this product. The grinds fall into an attached cup at the bottom that has a see-through window so you can check your progress. After finishing the 17 gm scoop for her espresso, I just slip the bottom portion off, put her espresso basket on top (fits perfectly), invert it and tap on the collector portion. All of the grounds are then in perfect position in the basket to be tamped. Very neat with no mess on the counter. Whereas the cranking handle on my old grinder is held on with a nut that I need a pliers to loosen each time I want to remove it, the JavaPresse handle fits nicely into a hexagonal post at the top and can thus be easily attached and detached, perfect for traveling with it. In comparison with my old grinder that has a glass jar at the bottom, the thin cylindrical design of the JavaPresse makes it easy to hold with one hand while turning the crank with the other, actually allowing both hands and arms to get into the act to facilitate the process. The linkage inside the JavaPresse seems to provide better orientation of the burrs to give a more uniform particle size distribution than my old hand grinder. Disassembly of the components inside the JavaPresse for cleaning is also much easier than with my old hand grinder, and the videos provided clearly show how the periodic cleaning process is done. In addition to all of these functional elements, the brushed stainless look is really aesthetically pleasing in comparison with my old grinder, (and actually I payed more for that old grinder than I did for the JavaPresse !!)Finally, even before the product arrived, I received an e-mail from Raj at JavaPresse to let me know he was there to answer any questions I might have. I did have a few, and I was surprised at how quickly he got back to me; the company is very obviously customer oriented and they want to make sure the customer is happy with the product. To me this is every bit as important as all of the other things I mentioned because I know that if questions or problems do arise in the future, I can count on their great customer service. So this is one of those times I’ve bought something on Amazon that I wish they had an option to give it more than five stars in my review.

It does not disintegrate beans, it coerces them.

I purchased this 09/21, which means as of today, I have had it for 2 years and 6 months. I make 2 mugs of coffee each day, and I have ground my coffee with this for, on average, 6 days a week. In other words, pretty much all the time. During that period I have cleaned it twice; I don’t know why, it wasn’t malfunctioning, I just felt that it needed to be cleaned. That last cleaning was over a year ago. It continues to grind perfectly every day. Oh, and about that headline, if you use a powered blade grinder, you’re burning your beans as you disintegrate them into bits. The blade turns so fast and strikes the beans with such force that massive heat is produced on the beans. Instead, this ceramic burr grinder “coerces” the beans to become grounds at room temperature rather than beat them into submission.Don’t kid yourself, it’s work. It takes me about 2.5 minutes to grind 4 conical measuring spoons worth of beans, which is almost the whole loading chamber. Slowly, so as to not catch anything on fire. If you’re a freak about getting your coffee NOW, this isn’t going to work. If you’re a freak about sitting down with your freshly brewed coffee and savoring the exceptional, non-burnt taste, this is going to work for you in spades.I was going to include a photo in this review, but when I looked at it, it is identical to how it looked the day I got it. It also looks identical to the manufacturer’s photos on this page. Not bad for everyday use.

    Powerful little grinder

I work in an incubator type company with several start-up companies. The most recent is a coffee roasting business where I have been “educated” by the coffee purists on how to properly prepare and drink coffee. Part of this education involved learning about how it’s best to buy whole bean coffee and grind it just before brewing. After researching a few burr grinders I bought this JavaPresse grinder. I really like this grinder, even though it takes more work than my coworker’s electrical grinder. Mine is better though because you can really control how course or fine you want your coffee grinds. The coffee roaster told me to keep it as course as sea salt, which this grinder does perfectly. It’s also capable of making it as fine as sand. The electrical grinder my coworker uses just makes it one way, which is a uniform fine grind. He also uses a Mr Coffee though, so that might provide more insight into his daily coffee experience. I have been educated also on how using a french press, or pour over is the best method of brewing coffee (sarcasm aside, it actually does make a huge difference and makes you really appreciate the subtle flavors of good coffee).I think this grinder is great for traveling, as it’s really small and compact. I usually have to split up the coffee I need for my French Press in 3 rounds as I don’t want to overwhelm the grinder. So I only put two coffee scoops in this at a time. This is fine for me using it at work as I’m only preparing it for myself or two people at most. This grinder also got the nod of approval from the coffee purists at the roasting company here so that should say a lot. They have every hipster coffee making tool out there, from the Chemex to coffee sampling utensils, and the owner also bought one of these JavaPresse grinders. I also wanted to mention that the owner of this company is awesome and extremely passionate about his products. If you have a chance to try their coffee service you should. I loved the packaging of their whole bean coffee, as well as the information included that tells you exactly where the coffee is from and what flavor profile it has. Great company overall, thank you!

    Smooth going so far!

I’ve been looking for a burr grinder so that I can improve on my French Press coffee (I’ve been using an electric blade grinder that I bought on sale a handful of years ago, which does not produce a consistent grind),, and I researched coffee grinders for weeks. I knew that I wanted a manual grinder, since we occasionally experience power outages in our neighborhood. As I obsessively researched, I kept seeing glowing descriptions of the JavaPresse manual grinder over and over again. After a lot of thought and comparing it to other manual grinders at a similar price point, I decided to give it a try. So far, I’m really enjoying this grinder. I’d read some reviews which state that the coarse grind for French Press isn’t consistent, but so far it seems fairly good-and I’m guessing that most manual burr grinders don’t grind as consistently as electric burr grinders, so it meets my expectations. Setting my grind was a little tough because my preschooler kept talking and the “clicks” are somewhat quiet, but I’ll keep playing around with the grinder to figure out the optimal number of clicks for my coffee. I also really appreciate that the company has so many videos and resources to help with the coffee grinding process. My cups of coffee have been very smooth and delicious, and grinding the beans doesn’t take long at all-I’ve found that there’s just enough time to grind them while the water heats in my kettle. The grinder is very quiet, too. I’m very happy with it so far!

Amazing for Off the Grid Coffee Making!

Hey there Folks! So I just wanna state my qualifications:1) I am not a coffee Snob2) I drink coffee like a white gurl3) You’d be surprised to know I don’t actually have a clue what good coffee is.What I do know, though, is that this grinder does the Job!! I use Black Rifle Coffee Company Coffee and I love doing a medium-coarse grind to compliment my French press and really extract flavors.A few tips with this grinder:1) Try different grinds to dial in what YOU like. I can’t be the definition of what someone would enjoy or not enjoy2) When using a French press make sure its at least larger than a medium grind and to give you an idea 18 clicks out is Coarse, 9 clicks out from being completely tightened is Medium and so on.3) Cleaning this with a clean and DRY brush is super easy and fast and I’ve had 0 issues. Personally I barely clean it. Maybe clean it every 2 weeks unless you’re OCD.4) Field use is good for it. I have used this as a comfort item while I’m in the field and it’s been in the front of my pack when I jump out of planes on operations. It can take the abuse5) When grinding slow and even strokes work best. If you bounce the grinder around it will not grind evenly and you’ll get a larger grind size than you want.In closing I’d say the only con is the bottom part that catches the coffee doesn’t stay on well and I actually attached a Velcro cord on it that attaches to the bottom to the coffee catchers so it doesn’t have to be held closed while coffee is being ground. I do also have to say it takes about 4 minutes for a medium course grind. You won’t need a shake weight if you use this thing every day.

A clear winner. Would buy again. Great gift idea for coffee lovers and connoisseurs.

What a great product from a great company. This little grinder from JavaPresse is a blast to use in the morning. It is very well engineered and well built from quality materials. When used and cared for as directed, even a novice like I can effortlessly to brew a phenomenal tasting cup of coffee.I have finally found an answer to my former daily nerve jarring, ear blasting coffee grinding experience. This grinder generates a pleasant crackling, crunching sound as the ceramic burs easily and quickly crush your beans to your desired coarseness. Highly recommended. I use this grinder with the

JavaPresse Hand Drip Pour Over Coffee Maker with Stand | Clever Brewer with Reusable Filter Dripper

; another great product that I recommend. In addition to a quieter, more peaceful start to the morning, with ceramic burs gently grinding your beans you avoid the static that builds up with an electric grinder; ground coffee pours smoothly from the hopper into the filter leaving virtually no remaining fragments in the hopper. Additionally, it is an interesting, good-looking piece of equipment sitting on the counter or shelf, taking very little space. Bonus: no cord to fight.Clean up is fast and easy with soap, a soft brush and water. The ceramic burs are quite fragile. A toothbrush is a great tool to safely clean them of any oils or debris. Just be certain all is dry prior to reassembling your grinder. My result with this method of grinding is far better mug of coffee that easily rivals anything I have bought over a counter, served in a paper ‘mermaid’ cup. Grinding and brewing your own coffee is also far more convenient, economical, and environmentally sound than braving the morning zombies also hunting down a cup. You are also able avoid supporting a coffee company whose values may differ from yours. The customer service at JavaPresse is excellent as well. After ordering the grinder I received an email thanking me, including a PDF of the instruction manual and offering assistance if the product arrived with any damage. It arrived promptly, undamaged and was well packaged. Great new company with genuine commitment to their products and customers. I did not receive anything for this review; I am simply very pleased to have discovered great products from a great company. Cheers!

Great value for the coffee lover!

Making my way through quarantine connects directly to my enjoyment of coffee. Prior to covid-19, my life rushed from task to task, and I took little time to enjoy the beautiful aroma and taste of quality coffee. I had a blade grinder and would mash the obligatory mass-produced bag of beans purchased at Walmart. What was I thinking??Fast forward to today and now that I have time on my hands, the pure enjoyment of coffee rose in my life’s priorities. There’s nothing more relaxing than a beautiful mug of top-shelf coffee. All of life’s worries seem to wash away for at least the 30 minutes of cafe bliss.I recall buying a Hario V60 years ago but lost track of it’s whereabouts. A bit of cabinet searching uncovered the Hario plus a stockpile of coffee filters. The first few cups were good but not stellar. Research led me to look at a burr grinder to replace the blade runner. There may be fifty ways to leave your lover, but there is really just one way to grind. Enter my next research effort… which burr grinder to buy? Go cheap? Go with the highest ratings? Play Amazon bingo and just pick one?In the end I selected this grinder as the right combination of quality, price, company brand, YouTube research, and of course consumer reviews. And I must say this is exactly what the coffee doctor ordered! The “Total Coffee Experience” is now complete! My TCE is my morning ritual. It doesn’t take much time to grind fresh coffee, set up the Hario and make a pourover. The results are stellar and this grinder is a critical component of the TCE.Cleaning is super easy, and the quality workmanship is par excellence. The people behind the company seem cool and at the ready to help if I ever need anything. So save yourself the time to research grinders and go with this one. You’ll be happy you did.Enjoy your TCE!

If you’re unsure (and need a grinder for espresso)

My review is for the average person looking for a budget friendly way to most efficiently grind coffee beans into espresso. If you’re unsure if you want a budget electrical grinder vs this manual one, get this one. The electrical ones are loud, hard to clean and finicky when all you want is a fresh cup of coffee while you’re half asleep in the morning. With this manual grinder you can freshly grind whatever bean you’re in the mood for that morning without having to grind more than necessary. You can take this thing camping, or use it during a hurricane / bad storm. Espresso anytime you want, assuming you have the other necessary items to brew.It works. It grinds the beans fine enough for an espresso machine and doesn’t take too much elbow grease, 3-5 minutes max. Just grind ahead and store if you’re worried about that in the morning. It’s quiet. It’s sturdy. It works. It’s compact and perfectly sized in my opinion. Just put it in the cabinet above your espresso machine and whallah. It’s worth the cost and I am so happy I chose this manual Burr grinder over one of those cheap plug-in machines. Now I’m not saying this is better than a super high quality expensive real coffee shop grinder, but THIS is the best budget friendly choice.

Great alternative to a pricey electric grinder.

I wanted to write a review, even though there are plenty of accurate ones already posted, because I would like to share the info I was looking for (and couldn’t find) before I caved and purchased this. First of all, this is a great alternative to a pricey electric grinder. Most cheap electric ones are blade grinders and give an uneven grind. If you want a good, electric, conical burr grinder, you have to drop a small fortune. This grinder does the same job with a little more effort, however it works well if you are just grinding for one person. I am the only coffee drinker in my family so it works for me. I also wanted to specifically share my routine here. I use a refillable kcup for my Keurig. The whole coffee process, from grabbing the coffee beans to adding my sugar takes exactly ten minutes. I weigh 9 grams of beans, which I found to be good for a kcup through trial and error. The actual grinding process takes about 2.5 minutes (make sure you go clockwise and never counterclockwise or you could damage the burrs). Then the rest of the time is really just pouring the grinds straight from the grinder into the kcup, brewing, weighing/measuring sugar and all that stuff for what I call a perfect cup of coffee!Yes, it is more effort to grind beans manually, but I don’t find it to be too time consuming. I basically went from a 5 minute process to 10 minutes. So far I enjoy the process and the results. It’s worth it! It really does taste better with fresh beans 🙂

Works great! Love my coffee <3

Great grinder!Pros:- This coffee grinder is easy to hold – the handle turns easily and the knob is big enough to grasp without my fingers cramping.- The fit is tight which makes it great for storing extra grounds. And you don’t have to worry about them spilling out, because they won’t.- Easy to adjust the grind.Cons:- none, really – I could suggest some tweaks, but I realize there’d be other pros that would suffer (like, if the handle were a little bigger, that would make it nicer still to grasp, but that would compromise on some of the ease of travel (it’s nice a compact the way it currently is designed)I’ve taken this grinder camping, but usually use it at home. I have not yet needed to replace the grind stones, so I don’t know how involved that is. But as of this moment, it’s worked great and I use it regularly.

A must-have for every vacation now!

As I’ve fallen deeper and deeper down the coffee rabbit hole, I’ve found a great cup of coffee is made of a combination of so many things. You need good water, fresh beans, and a consistent setup. I can live without my chemex and scale on a trip, but I absolutely can never go back to poor water and stale, pre-ground, grocery store coffee. Fortunately, with this little hand grinder I can get the same consistent and fresh-ground goodness anywhere without hauling around my big electric burr grinder. It’s a little bit difficult to set the grind size as it’s simply set by tightening a nut on the bottom of the top grinder portion. So you might find yourself grinding a bit, and tightening or loosening for a minute before you can get cranking. The only other downside, and I’m not sure how you get to the reviews of a manual grinder without thinking about this already, is that it’s manual. Great for things like camping, but trying to grind whole pots of coffee at a time is exhausting. I’ve seen people attach cordless drills to these, and I see the appeal, but would advise against it as there is no grease it these. (Un)fortunately, the crank attaches over a pentagonal bolt instead of hexagonal, probably to discourage such automation.Since there’s no grease though, you won’t get any grease in your grind, and this thing is a dream to clean. You can FULLY disassemble and re-assemble the entire grinding mechanism to clean grounds out between the conical burrs and anywhere else. I’ve never met a coffee grinder that cleanable. The entire body portion is made of a nice brushed stainless steel, but the crank seems to be some other kind of steel as mine has already begun to rust a little in some small spots. This holds enough beans and grounds for about 3 cups of coffee in one batch.

Great coffee bean grinder for one or two cups, perfect for travel.

I recently found a coffee that I loved, it the company that was just putting it out only had it in beans. I could’ve called and had them grind the beans but decided it’s time to take my coffee to the next level and get a bean grinder. Since it is my first, I wanted something simple and inexpensive in case I didn’t like it.This grinder is pretty simple to use. Put the beans in the top and turn the handle. Since I have a Keurig and only brew one cup at a time, this was perfect. Takes about a minute to grind the beans in this grinder and has multiple settings. The canister for the grounds is perfect to pour into my reusable Keurig filter k-cup. Multiple settings to change how fine you grind the beans. If you are looking to grind more than enough beans for 2 cups might be a pain, but I have fallen in love of the process of grinding my beans fresh and then brewing my coffee. You could probably grind beans for 4 cups maybe a little more but you’ll be turning the handle for about a minute per cup. I’ve been a coffee drinker for 25 years and when I used this with my newfound beans I love, it was by far the best coffee I have ever had. This is also perfect for travel and considering taking this and my beans on an Alaskan cruise next month. The thought of sitting on the deck watching the scenes of Alaska with the perfect cup of coffee is just paradise.

The best coffee grinder I have ever used.

I have used my JavaPresse Conical Burr Grinder since June of 2017, and that’s seven and a half years on. The performance has been exceptional, consistent, and reliable. Only now am I experiencing any issues? It seems the place where the hand crank attaches to the shaft has become rounded out enough to prevent the proper operation. Both the hand crank and the shaft show signs of “normal” wear and tear. I would say that more than seven years is a good long time for this product. I am an extremely satisfied customer and plan to purchase another grinder soon. Thank you for being so dedicated to coffee. I have also been a frequent listener to the Stay Grounded Podcast. And I was once a whole bean coffee subscriber.

This is a Great thing To Have

After years of service, my Krupps grinder died. Kaput. Not sure why; maybe it was just it’s time.I bought this little manual grinder, and I am very happy with it. It is well made, and works perfectly. The JavaPresse folks are nice people, and are very communicative; customer satisfaction is obviously very important to them. There are lots of positive things to say about this grinder. You take the top off, put in the coffee beans, put the top back on, put the handle on (top has to go on first; it’s a no brainer), grind it in a clockwise motion about 20 rotations (probably less is required, but I’m thorough), take off the bottom part, and voila……… the grind adjustment is easy to set, and appears to be more “controllable” than my Krupps ever was.Positives: 1) Well made, metal (aluminum,, I think) construction. The internal grinder appears to be the genuine, old school, ceramic based conical burr type. 2) No power necessary. Manual. Take it anywhere. This would have been handy 2 weeks ago, when the hurricane hit us. Although the generator covered me on everything, bean grinding would have been one less thing to use a plug for.Negatives? Well, it’s small. It’s a one to two cup thing. This would not go well for making a pot of coffee. For my one cup of Starbuck Breakfsast Blend beans going through my press, this is perfect for me.There are no other negatives regarding this grinder.I ground it about a 100 rotations the first time, waiting for the grinding noise (indicitave of beans being in the grinder) to go away, to signify I had ground all of my beans. Apparently after the first use, the grinding sound is there to stay; I just do about 20 rotations and I’m done. I have no doubt that less than 20 rotations is required to obtain my requisite amount of ground coffee; but like I said before, I like to be thorough.I strongly recommend this Javapresse grinder. This unit is great, and the customer service is outstanding. Excellent deal, all around….

    Zero Waster’s Dream Grinder

I LOVE my coffee, but hate that most ground coffee beans come pre-packaged in something that I can’t re-use. I can grind at the store and bring my own container, but then the coffee doesn’t taste as “fresh”. If I buy whole beans, I had nothing to grind it with and didn’t want to purchase an electric grinder (because it’s not super sustainable). And most manual grinders that I found were made of plastic. 1st world problems, I’m know, but as someone who loves a really good cup of coffee but wants it harvested sustainably with as little impact to the environment as possible (do my little part in the bigger scheme), this was a challenge. This coffee grinder has eased my conscience and I still get a great cup of coffee when I want one. It is super easy to use…However, you do get a nice upper arm work-out first thing in the morning. I don’t mind this, but I know some other people aren’t functional 1st thing so that might pose a problem. I, myself, don’t mind grinding the beans the night before and storing in a small jar to use first thing in the morning. (That’s fresh enough for me. ;D) It is a little challenging to clean if you insist upon a deep clean (and I do). I googled and found this YouTube video on how to clean it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG1pgwOe1LU&feature=youtu.be). All in all, this was a great purchase for me and my family.

    So far so good

I purchased this manual grinder approximately 2 months ago, and have used it most days since. So far, I’m very pleased with my purchase. I bought it because I’m trying to use less plastics. Throwing away the folgers can (or any other can) always makes me aware of how much plastic I contribute to the landfill. I’ve been looking for small changes I can easily make to help keep plastics out of the landfill. This manual grinder was one change. With Covid, our stores haven’t had as many bulk food items, but I’m hoping they come back. For now, I feel like a bag of coffee beans is better than the big plastic tub of ground coffee. Another bonus is that I get a small amount of exercise by doing the grind each morning. Also, I feel like I get a really good cup of coffee when I combine fresh ground beans with my Aeropress coffee maker. But even if I use my pour over Brew Buddy, I still get delicious coffee. A final note – I like the control I have over the grind size. If I end up disappointed with this product down the road, I will update my review. As this review started it, so it will end – so far, so good! For the price (I paid $39.98 before taxes), I do hope it lasts a long time. My hope and expectation is that this will last at least 2-3 years, and that I can buy replacement parts rather than throwing another item in the landfill, when it does need repair.

    Love it.

I had a few electric Burr grinders, but they kept breaking on me! So I bought this little thing…. and I LOVE IT! It was super easy to unpack and start using. The short YouTube video they have on how to take it out of the package and start using it was very helpful (though it is so simple I think I would have figured it out haha). A few things to note:1) It is a manual grinder, so obviously it takes a little more time and energy than an electric grinder. It takes me a minute or two to grind my coffee every morning now, whereas the electric grinder takes about 10 seconds. I’ve actually started to enjoy the coffee-making process a bit more now!2) It is super quiet! If you worry about waking up other family members or roomies when grinding coffee…. this is a great solution!3) Their customer service is amazing. I’ve gotten a few emails from them “just to make sure everything is right”. Everything IS right; so I haven’t had a chance to test their follow-through, but the sure seem eager to make sure I’m happy! I get the idea that if there was anything wrong, they’d bend over backwards to make it right.4) The grinder is solidly made, simple, and compact. It would be great for camping/traveling.5) If you are grinding coffee for more than one person, be prepared for the extra time and effort. Personally, my arm would get tired out from grinding for more than a cup or two; so I’d either pass the grinder around and include my guests in the coffee-making process, or I’d buy an electric burr grinder.6) By the way – I use a french press, and it this grinder makes great coffee grounds for my french press.Summary: I love it, but if any of the above concerns you, it might not be the right one for you.

    Great with the AeroPress system

This is a very handy little travel grinder. I use it with my AeroPress when I work in Las Vegas. I’m not going to a casino at 5:00 AM to get a cup of coffee. For the AeroPress, I only need a couple tablespoons of ground coffee, and it really only takes a minute or two to grind that much. The little container at the bottom has a window in it so you can see how much you have. The whole thing fits into the hollow of the AeroPress plunger, which is genius. The handle doesn’t attach; it has a pentagon-shaped spud at the top and matching hole in the handle, which work together well. If you get crazy with your grinding motion the handle might pop off and you’ll punch the wall, so self-restraint is key. The grind adjustment works well, but it’s a matter of click-click-click until you get it the way you like it and then leave it; there aren’t numbers to remember. All in all, this is the perfect addition to the AeroPress, and to my Las Vegas survival kit. Just toss in an electric water boiler, a mug, and some whole beans, and I’ve got very nice coffee whenever I want it. Because believe you me; there’s nothing going on in a Las Vegas casino at 5:00 AM that anyone needs to experience or be part of.

Price, Performance, Service: A Great Burr Grinder.

Verified Purchase. I purchased the Java Press Maual Burr Grinder 6/16. I wanted to replace my Krups electric blade gender and get a coarse grind for a French Press and Percolator. I use several brands of Organic beans, from Costco, on-line sites and local roastersThe Java Press produces a nice coarse grind for my tastes and is simple to operate and easy to clean. I clean every 2-3 weeks and recommend using a bowl of warm soapy water to soak the parts, then rinse and dry on a paper towel. Make certain you have both the black plastic and metal washers to bookend the spring and be careful around the sink.I have taken the grinder and my French Press trailer camping along with a good supply of bean. Grind, brewand drink, no problem. Also I take the the Java Press in my carry-on when flying – Not necessary to forego a great cup of coffee when you travel.Bedst part: The company website is extremely helpful and Irene and Raj are available for email questions They deeply care that we are satisfied customers and will go the distance to provide excellent servic. When the black plastic insert in the reovable burr got cracked, I eamiled Irene at Java Press, a photo of the issue. She was on it immediately and sent a replacement grinder with the newest burr that contains a nylon center suppot, an upgrade over plastic. Her support was off the chart. The Java Press is a 5 star winner for a manual burr grinder and the customer service gets 10 Stars** Java Press is one of the best values at Amazon and will produce the grind you need to fine-tune a great cup of Joe. I grind every morning and in a few minutes have fresh gound beanssteeping away. Quality product + excellent support. Go with it.

    Best Grind for your Money

Great little grinder. In the past year my wife bought me what we thought would be a grinder that would last (Handground) It was pretty and had nice features but it did not stand the test of time. The Java Presse costs less than half of the Handground grinder, grinds faster and easier, is super lightweight with a smaller footprint and is much easier to dial in your grind. The Java Presse is made from lightweight stamped and rolled (stainless steel?) It is lightweight and has a good feel to it. The assembly is “friction fit” together, meaning the top, bottom and handle do not screw on or snap in but are designed to be a perfect fit onto the main body of the grinder and the friction of the fit holds this together. The arm has a hex cutout that fits over the hex shaped grinder shaft that drives the burrs. The catch pot at the bottom has a nice glass inlay that gives it a solid feel and enough weight for the grinder to stand on it’s own.Compared to the Handground -1. The Java Presse is easier to grind as the handle is connected directly to the grind shaft. The Handground has mechanical gearing in the top which allows the handle to move in a vertical direction as opposed to the planar direction of the Java Presse handle. This made it more difficult to grind and is what wore down and broke on the Handground2. The Java Presse is quicker to grind. The Handground took about 100-110 rotations of the handle to grind 2 tablespoons of beans. For the same grind (French Press course grind) The Java Presse took about 70-80 turns for 2 tablespoons of seeds. This seems to be inherent of the direct drive and length of the handle.3. The Java Presse is way quieter than the Handground. I would have to lift the Handground off the counter as the noise would reverberate through the countertop from grinding and it was still pretty loud. The Java Presse fits nicely in your hands and doesnt even feel like its grinding (it is) and hardly makes a peep.4. The Handground would hold about 4x more beans than the Java Presse. The Java Presse holds about 2.5 tablespoons of beans at a time. Realistically, unless you want to grind your whole bag at once it’s not a deal breaker. The Java Presse is the perfect size to make 32oz of French Presse coffee at a time.5. The Handground has a dial around the middle of the grinder where you can dial in your grind from 1-8 in half steps. The Java Presse has a manual dial at the bottom of the burrs to dial in your grind. It seems a little more “finished” on the Handground but if you wanted to “fine tune” your grind the Java Presse falls on the “Analog” side of that.6. The catch pot on the Java Presse slides over the bottom of the grinder and is held in place by friction. This may be the only downfall to this grinder. You naturally hold the pot in place while grinding but I could see where you might drop the pot if you dont grip the grinder firmly in the middle and hold the pot in place. The Handground had a glass catch that screwed into the bottom of the grinder.7. Did I mention costs? For the price of the Handground you could buy 3 of the Java Presse grinders. If this little guy holds up for half as long as the Handground it’s already a winner.

Great product. Portable. Light. Not for large volumes.

I truly like this product and glad I made the purchase. Part of the reasoning for my purchase is to throw it in the truck when I build out the bed of it for long road trips and camping and backpacking. The uniform grind is very good. Since I only drink one type of coffee-French Roast-black- and use a French Press I am satisfied with the course grind (left turn the nut until the screw is barely more than flush with the nut…about 19 clicks after you turn it all the way to the right then back off 19 clicks). However, I make 24 ounces of coffee each morning at the house and take it to work in a 24 ounce Thermos. The volume of the hopper nor receptacle will not hold that volume of coffee beans and grinds for (3) eight ounce coffee cups so I have to refill it and do it again. It does take over a minute of hand grinding to make the volume of ground coffee (4 tbsp per 8 ounce) but I do not have a problem with that since that time is being used to boil the water.I will most likely purchase a wall-mounted hand-grinder for the house and just use this for the truck. If you are not changing types/flavors of coffee there is no need to clean it. You should clean it if you switch types/flavors of coffee beans. There will be abit of cross-contamination of flavors.Would recommend.

A Coffee Grinder to be Enjoyed for Generations to Come….

So glad I purchased this coffee grinder from JavaPresse. I use it every morning when I make my coffee and it grinds those little beans down to little grains of sweet, sweet caffeine nectar that I need to wake my weary soul up. The grinder itself is high quality, well made and durable. I plan on passing this coffee grinder down to my children and my childrens children, and my childrens children children and so on. I believe the quality and durability will last for ages and what makes me happy is knowing that this coffee grinder will be around for centuries….that way the first thing my offspring will think of in the morning is ME as they grind their coffee beans with the very same coffee grinder that I used to grind my coffee beans…how unbelievable is that?? However, I am now realizing a problem with this coffee grinder….I have two children….when they get married and have children, what if they each have two children…then that will be a total of six of my offspring but only one JavaPresse Coffee grinder….will only one child inherit the coffee grinder….perhaps the eldest should inherit it…and give it to their eldest and so on….not sure how to tackle this problem. Hhhhmmmm….I think I’m just going to purchase 12 more manual coffee grinders from JavaPresse and use a different one every morning…that way everyone stays happy and the family does not get torn apart due to infighting over my very durable and long lasting coffee grinder made by the fabulous folks at JavaPresse!!

    Perfect Grinder for Me

A few years ago, my wife and I vacationed in Venice and fell in love with the Bialetti Moka Pot and Lavazza coffee. For the past two years, I’ve been grinding my coffee with a cheap steel blade, so the size of my grinds was inconsistent. Finally, I decided that I wanted a burr grinder to solve this problem. For Father’s Day, my kids purchased the most expensive electric burr grinder that they could find and I was extremely happy to try it out. However, after grinding around half a pound of coffee, the grinder jammed. I tried cleaning it with a brush and it still didn’t work. It was time to try something else.I purchased the Java Presse manual grinder because of the great reviews, so I wanted to see how I would like it. In particular, I was wondering if it was going to jam on me and if it was worth the trouble of grinding my coffee by hand. After figuring out my grind setting, I quickly realized that this grinder worked extremely well in producing the correct grind for my Moka Pot and was reliable. No jams and no fuss with the Java Presse! Now, what about the time it takes to grind the coffee? It takes about two minutes to grind in the morning. For some people, that’s two minutes that they can’t afford to waste. For me, it’s time that I use to work out my arms, clear my mind, and boil the water for the Moka Pot. In short, I couldn’t be happier with the Java Presse and would recommend it for anyone looking for a burr grinder.

It is easy to use and perfect for traveling. I find the grind for my aeropress to be perfect. You pull out the burr grinder and drop coffee inside, push the grinder back in and screw the grinder down. I just tightened it up the entire way and the grind was perfect. Love it and will continue to use it in the mornings at home for the quiet it offers on those EARLY mornings when I get up way before everyone else.. LOVE!

    Simple and effective design!

My first impression are very positive. It has a straight forward design and simple mechanism. I am very impressed with the ceramic Burr. I’ve only used it on coarse for French Press, and it is a satisfying addition to my coffee ritual.I would like if the hopper had a locking mechanism so that the bin wouldn’t separate if handled incorrectly. I feel like I need to grip the two pieces when grinding, which adds to fatigue when grinding a lot. It isn’t really that bad, I just switch hands and keep going. Also I’m concerned about the grinder separating in general and grinds spilling, making a mess. The curved grinding handle is a nice touch, but I would also like to see it secure in place. The lid simply has a hole so the handle attaches directly to the drive shaft. It all needs to come apart to fill the hopper.Disassembly for cleaning is not complicated, but there are small pieces which like to stick in place and my large fingers had difficultly reaching inside the cylinder to remove the spring and plastic washer, but there’s a trick you get used to once you do it a few times.I would imagine that these extra latching features and design modifications would increase the cost and complexity of design, so for the price I think the grinder is very functional and a great value. Overall I am very happy with my purchase and would buy again from JavaPresse!

    Compact and simple

I had an electric coffee grinder for a couple of years, given to me by a friend. While the electric grinder worked, it was not only bulky, taking up valuable countertop space, but also horribly loud; I try to be courteous to neighbors and so I was reluctant to run my coffee grinder first thing in the morning… when I needed it most.I saw that this JavaPresse Manual Coffee Grinder had good reviews on Amazon so I bought one. It’s very easy to see why it gets great reviews!First, this grinder is very small and compact. If space is at a premium, then this is the coffee grinder for you. Perhaps there is a smaller one out there, but I can’t imagine there are too many that are a lot smaller.Second, the controls/adjustments are minimal: there is the grinding handle, the removable top for loading coffee beans, the removable bottom for emptying the grounds, and an inner adjustment dial for calibrating the size of your grind.Third, this coffee grinder just feels like a quality item. Most of the parts are made of stainless steel, with minimal use of plastics and the actual grinding component made of ceramic. There’s nothing on it that I look at and think “uh oh, I bet that’s gonna break”. Of course, only time will tell but I’m optimistic. Finally, the quantity of coffee that I can grind with this mill is just right for a cup of coffee. That means that there’s no excess to set aside (where it can dry out and lose flavor) or discard. Perfect for someone who wants their morning cup and not an entire pot.Update, Feb/25: This thing finally stopped working abruptly. It got jammed with coffee beans and after cleaning it out and trying again, the problem came back instantly. That means that this lasted me about 5.5 years before it was toast, though I didn’t use it a ton in that time, as I try to buy pre-ground coffee whenever possible.

    Used daily since 2017

As I stood grinding my coffee this morning, like every morning before, I reminded myself how much I love my JavaPresse. In a world so fast-paced, where everything is immediate gratification, my rhythmic routine makes me smile. First, as I start to grind, I stand in my kitchen looking out into the backyard, eyeing all of my beautiful plants and trees, watching the birds chirping, and feeling so blessed. I stop to open the JavaPresse to smell the aroma of freshly ground beans; I continue the rhythm of grinding while anticipating my first taste of morning coffee. I’ve owned my JavaPresse since 2017; it travels with me wherever I go because stopping to enjoy everything around me, including the smell of freshly ground beans, makes me happy! I have no idea why I’ve never left a review for this fantastic grinder, but I love my JavaPresse!! It is compact, easy to clean, incredibly well made, and of course, it looks aesthetically pleasing on my counter next to my large French press! If you’re wondering, I travel with the Java Presse, a bag of beans, a small hot pot, and a small Bodum French press!! So worth it!!! By the way, this is not just for morning use; I grind beans in the afternoon too, but not quite at the same slow pace!! Enjoy.

Breaks Quickly, Too Time Consuming Beforehand

*second edit* nearly 2 years later and still works great.*edit* I reached out to the company since for some reason this product is not eligible for returns through Amazon. They were quick to respond and said I must have received a defect item. They mailed me out a replacement free of charge which I have yet to use as I bought ground coffee after the last one broke. I will update this review when I try the new one.Original review:Firstly this thing is small and super time consuming. Grinding enough coffee for 16oz in my French press would take 10 minutes. But the worst part is it broke in under 2 months of use of making coffee for a single person nearly daily. The issue is the screw you use for the grind adjustment eventually started to turn with the grinder handle. This made it so whenever I’d grind my coffee the adjustment would begin tightening and making the grind finer and finer until the grinder would jam. This was no good as I need a course grind for my French press. Also the handle would often slip a turn and catch nothing, just rotating with no grind action.Definitely one of my worst ever Amazon purchases.

    So Far So Good

I’ve only used it once so far but I’m itching to get my free bag of coffee so I’m reviewing now. At first I was afraid the capacity of the loading area would be too small for the amount of coffee I like to make in a pour over (Chemex). I do about 6 tablespoons of ground beans to about 30oz of water. The loader got me to that amount of ground coffee no problem. It took a few minutes of grinding but I kind of enjoy the process so it never felt tedious to me. Switch hands and get a small forearm workout in, eh? It’s pretty quiet but you definitely hear it grinding away. I wouldn’t care even if it were loud though. I haven’t traveled with it but I can’t see why it wouldn’t be 5stars for that purpose other than you might need to find a way to attach the arm to the grinder so as not to misplace it. It’s easy to use as far as manual coffee grinders go (I’m assuming; I’ve never owned another manual grinder), but obviously not easy relative to an electric grinder. It doesn’t seem like it will be that easy to clean because of the disassembly and assembly required, as well as a lot of small crevices, but luckily you should only have to do that about once a month depending on how often you use it. Javapresse recommends using a q-tip with soapy water. Some kind of small soft brush or even toothbrush would probably work too. Only one use in, but I like it and would recommend it as the best manual grinder I could find in my research based on overall value (quality and price).

For older people and for people with arthritis use a gripping glove, a slow to medium-slow motion, don’t grip the top too hard and try to move both hands together in a pattern that is easiest on your hands. The motion can be elliptical to reduce stress.

    Great for French press camping!

Never having a good cup of coffee while camping was an issue for me, percolating over a fire usually was too harsh, instant was definitely lousy. So finally I decided to try a French press and this manual grinder. I took some learning but we now have the best camp coffee. This unit was purchased in 1/2018 and used regularly on the weekends. Just now it started not working, spinning inside instead of grinding.Purchasing another of these and will try to see what is going on with the old one.

Works For Bears. Please Send With Boy Scouts.

So, I’m not like most bears. Right now up here in Orr, Minnesota, the rest of the bears are sleeping. Contrary to popular belief, we bears don’t take our deep winter naps just because it is cold – we do it because food is hard to come by in the Winter weather. It’s simply far more efficient for us to fatten up and sleep the weight away during the snowy months. But I am still awake, you see. Like your Yogi, I am smarter than the average bear. I have a plan. It works. It is brilliant in its simplicity, really. I don’t bother to forage for food. No, instead, I let the food come to me. As I said, I’m not like most bears.Oh hush, I’m getting to the coffee grinder, really I am. We bears tend to expound quite a bit so I’m afraid you’ll just have to suffer and, ahem, bear with me.There are several Boy Scout troops in my area. These aren’t the soft, pudgy ones you get from the big cities you humans love so much. No, these are the real Boy Scouts of old. They will come camping in any weather, even during the worst blizzards, testing their furless, pink little bodies against the might of the weather. These Boy Scouts, you see, are the source of my – no, no, settle down, I haven’t eaten any of the Boy Scouts. Don’t be silly. The Department of Natural Resources – hmph, can you imagine, a majestic beast like myself relegated to being called a “resource,” how demeaning. I mean really, your human-centric, primate-archal worldview is such a problem. You simply have no respect for us creatures of the forest anymore and if I had the mind to I’d just – I, ah, I apologize.Anyway, as I was saying, the Department of Natural Resources would be rather upset, and I’d like to evade the hunters for years to come. So no, I haven’t eaten any of your Boy Scouts.Boy Scouts. Coffee Grinder. Right. So, as I’m sure you have surmised by now, I wait for the Boy Scouts to go camping and then I pay them a little visit. They don’t mind, really. It’s quite a thrill for them to have a visit from the natives, you know, and a little cultural exchange can go a long way towards building the understanding needed for long term cohabitation of Northern Minnesota. They love seeing my pawprints all over their camp. It’s endearing, really.Although I don’t sleep as deeply as my brothers and sisters, I DO still need a little something in the mornings to get me going, especially as I am getting on in my age, and sometimes the Boy Scouts bring coffee. Unfortunately, the last group brought full coffee beans. Can you believe that? Camping with whole coffee beans. Had I known I would have taken their coffee grinder, but by the time I had noticed I was already back in my den and the Boy Scouts were already on their way.Well, thankfully, I also took one of their smart phones. Silly boy had a simple password to guess on his account as well, so this really works out well for me. After browsing Amazon for a while – I mean, really, what better company to service nature’s wild population than one ran by those who live in a rain forest? – I decided upon this coffee grinder and ordered it.You think your postal carriers are scared of dogs, hm? Imagine one trying to deliver a package to “A Pine Tree, Orr, MN.” Not only did he have to figure out WHICH pine tree I meant, but on top of that I happened to be on site. I stood up to say hello, it’s only proper really, but he just dropped the box and ran. Can you believe it? It’s really no wonder that you humans complain about the postal service. They’re so rude and speciesist and had very little regard for my packa- oh, right, the grinder. You humans are so impatient.Yes yes yes, THE GRINDER. I get it.Well. Let me tell you that once I fumbled the box open (my paws aren’t quite as dexterous as your hands, as you may imagine), I found a rather beautiful coffee grinder. Pristine, gleaming stainless steel, something that is rather important if you live out in the woods as I do. It won’t stain or rust. Assembly was simple as well; all I had to do was seat the handle over the large nut atop the device. It was then ready to grind beans! The handle is easily removed, by the way. This is a great feature as it makes storage far easier (my den is rather cramped). Boy Scouts: Order this coffee grinder! The handle is very sturdy and it will stow away nicely in your packs, and I won’t mind having an extra to gift to my friends.I was concerned about being able to adjust the grind of the coffee. I am a bear, after all, and my paws are clumsy. Also of note: The nasal membrane of a human is about the size of a postage stamp. We bears have one the size of a bed sheet. As you can imagine, our senses of smell and taste are quite discerning, and having just the right grind to release the over 1,000 different chemical compounds fond in coffee can alter our experience greatly. However, the knob at the bottom of the grinder is of an ample size, even for a bear. I found no trouble operating the grinder. The knob itself has gentle stops along the way, so that it will hold its current position quite readily, only changing when you want to turn the knob. The cover on the bottom is a great addition. It is used to collect your fresh grounds. It is snug, but not too snug. You won’t have to worry about it simply falling off, but you won’t have any issues sliding it on and off as needed, either.Since I live in a den without electricity, I often cold brew my coffee and this technique requires a rather rough grind. This grinder did not disappoint; the grind was quite even at a rough grind, something many other grinders can’t quite manage. Just as a test I tightened it up and soon a fine powder was falling out the bottom. I found this quite entertaining until I inhaled.I did mention the sensitivity of our noses, yes? We can smell carrion miles away. Imagine a fine coffee powder inches from my nose!Well, I sneezed of course, and when we bears sneeze it can be rather, ah, wet. So there I was with a “misted” coffee grinder. I was a bit worried at first, but after a quick trip to the nearby river I was able to clean the grinder up quite easily. Stainless steel, you know.Big enough for a bear, small enough to be readily portable. An excellent, even, variable grind that I am sure will last many years. All without the need for electricity! At the price I paid – or, well, the Boy Scout paid, bless his soul – this grinder is an excellent deal and a great item for the discerning coffee lover in YOUR den. With Compliments,Mr. BearUpdate, Five Years LaterI’m an older bear now, it’s true, and it seems that I have outlasted this coffee grinder. The plastic piece which sits inside of the burr and rotates it finally developed stress fractures and broke. However, FIVE YEARS of almost daily use by a bear with big clumsy paws? That’s a well-made product.

    Trusty coffee grinder

This is a great little grinder. I specifically needed the ceramic conical burr, and I just don’t have the counter space for the full sized grinder my brother in law has. This little grinder is PERFECT. It grinds for my espresso machine and my aeropress. I can grind my beans while the water boils. I feel extremely peaceful and in the moment while I hand grind my delicious coffee beans. It is true that I may spend way too much of my time and energy planning on when and where I will have my next cup of coffee. But the first cup of the day is the most important. Freshly ground beans make such smooth coffee it’s worth the effort. I have a little electric coffee grinder and the quality of the coffee made from the two different grounds is huge. I like that the handle comes off for easy storage.

Practical grinder, perfect for a quick afternoon coffee.

I am very happy to carry this in my backpack to work everyday, it is great for when I am too late to make coffee at home or for an afternoon boost of coffee. It grinds the coffee to your “preferred” size, practical to use and the quality of the grinder speaks of the care in the design and overall build.I had a small hiccup with a “damaged” bur that I noticed after following their initial use instructions —it did not affect the grinding process or quality at all and it is made of ceramic so I understand things like this happens— so I contacted their costumer service and they were prompt to answer and provided a replacement in a timely and courteous manner.

    Well-made little grinder

I’m a late convert to coffee and still can’t drink it unless it’s iced, with added milk and a little chocolate. Brewed coffee kept in the refrigerator wasn’t giving me a strong enough flavor, and the cold brew mason jar style brewer worked, but it took a *lot* of grounds to make a single jar of the stuff. This grinder, whole beans, and a French press that stays in the fridge over night make coffee that even I like. The flavor’s a function of the beans and/or press, not the grinder, but the grinder makes it all possible. The hopper holds at least 7 tablespoons of whole beans, which is far less than the cold brew jar I used to use. The company’s YouTube video on how it works was really helpful, since I’d never used a grinder before. It was a little confusing at first how to adjust it for fine or coarse grinds, but the video cleared everything up. Since I’m the only person who uses mine and I always use the same kind of beans, I don’t bother rinsing it out every day, but it’s easy to wash. Grinding 7 tbsp of beans takes about 200 turns of the handle, but it turns easily and it’s obvious when you’ve ground all the beans. It would be ideal to travel with, if I did that, because it’s compact and the handle is easily detachable but hasn’t slipped once while I’m grinding the beans.

    Couldn’t ask for anything better!

I will start off by saying I am not a coffee expert by any means. I am a beginner as far as coffee goes outside of a traditional coffee pot. I read like reviews on this item and though it would be at least worth trying for the money. When I received the grinder it was very well packaged and was not damaged at all. In the box was a thank you not as well as a link to some great videos on how to get started. The company also sent me an email on how to get started and what to do when you first get it, which was extremely helpful considering I had never used one before. Once you put a few beans through to make sure there are no little bits of stuff in it, you’re ready to go! You couldn’t ask for a better manual coffee grinder. It is very easy to crank, the set up is very simple, and the grind is consistent. The burr is very easy to adjust, so you can go from super fine espresso coffee to super coarse French press style coffee. There isn’t much noise at all that comes from it, which is quite pleasant when I have two kids I try to not wake up on the weekends while making coffee. The capacity isn’t substantial but it is great for just a couple cups worth in a French press, which is my choice of brewing method. The grinder fits in my hand nicely, so it doesn’t make it awkward trying to grind the beans. Overall I am very pleased with this coffee grinder. It is very affordable, quiet, consistent, and doesn’t require anything but your choice of beans. I would recommend this item to anyone looking for something simple and easy!

    Awesome little grinder!

First I have to say there is nothing like fresh ground coffee. I don’t drink it myself, I make it for my girlfriend. As strange as it may sound, I enjoy the process of making coffee. The smell is amazing!Having said that I really like the size of this grinder. It is easy to use and the cylinder is just about perfect for my hand. It is easy to adjust and very smooth in the grinding. It doesn’t take a lot of effort tho it does take some time so don’t expect beans in an instant like those noisy electric units. Takes about a minute with a full hopper. My only complaint is that the arm will slip off when grinding when the unit is new. As you use it more the arm “breaks in” and stays on better. It only takes a few grinds for this to happen. The arm is removable to load the beans in the top and for ease of storage.Would I buy this again? Absolutely!Of you are looking for a coffee grinder for a single cup or maybe two cups and do not want to wake the entire neighborhood with that awful chaos, this is a great little grinder!

    Simple great design

This is my first manual coffee grinder so I don’t have a time to compare it to but I know I’m very picky about design and function. It works like a charm and even works better than I thought it would. It only takes me about 30 to 45 seconds the grind up a nice cup of coffee Worth of beans. You can adjust the settings to get a really find espresso grind or amor course grind, define are the grind the longer it takes to grind which might be kind of obvious. I like to grind it to a medium and stick with mostly French press these days although I was using it for espresso in the beginning.I love that the designer super simple and there’s not too many parts of us around with and the price is right so if this thing ever breaks or get worn out I’ll just buy another oneI’m kind of perplexed at the other grinders that cost 3, 4 and 7 times more than this. Like how much better can they really be? I suspect it’s a ton of hype. This has a nice finish and looks good on the counter.I would say the only improvement might be too have a way to attach the handle to the side of the unit when traveling. For now I just use a rubber band

    A nice protable grinder.

I’d made the decision to go back to whole bean after finding a coffee roaster that I liked their product and was able to buy in bulk so time to get a grinder that was a spice mill. After a little reading I came to this one and liked what I was reading from reviewers so decided to buy it. It’s been a few weeks and here’s my general thoughts:1) It’s smaller than I thought. About 7 inches high with a diameter of my hand size. The crank comes off so this is a very portable unit for those who travel. I’m planning to take mine when I travel so I can enjoy my coffee assuming the machines there take my refillable pods or there’s a means to brew my own.2) Not much is necessary for directions and I’ll admit I don’t remember them saying what the settings are or how many turns one way or the other it takes to changes the grind to a different format. Matter of fact I do remember them telling you drop a few beans in and grind them up, this size equals this type of grind. A litlte weak in the description part and would love to see a basic description and starting grind. I won’t ding them for it but buyer beware.3) It takes a little while to grind your own. Till you’re use to it it seems to take forever. Be prepared to make this part of of your morning ritual. Btw I’ve found that fully loading the top with beans gives me enough coffee for two brewings with a Keurig. The weaknesses I consider acceptable, if they’re meaningful treat reduce my rating as you see acceptable; for me, 5 stars.

The excellent ceramic grinder element is the star of the show.

For grind quality, I find this to be exceptional — you can get electric grinders from this price range and for twice this amount, but all have major issues with static and messes caused by static — no such issues with this. (I think a decent entry electric grinder would start at the 160 range, all the others below that seem to be messy w static and unreliable motors)Clearly, it is not as fast as an electric grinder, and my use is not intended for an everyday 12 cup family-sized coffee maker, which would be rather intense, but for sampling whole beans for small batches, I am really impressed. Though not as fast as electric, it is is a fun and soothing ritual. The coarser the grind, the easier it is to grind, but all grinds are easy, (extra fine is a good arm workout!)Make sure you take five minutes to follow the instructions, as there are subtle adjustments you might want to make, and give yourself one or two trial and error sessions for perfect grind, but once you learn, it’s all smooth sailing. The ceramic conical grinder element is the unseen the star of the show (like an engine in a Porsche) is truly excellent. From coarse (which I never use) to medium coarse (which I use I lot) to fine (which is surprisingly excellent), all the grinds are uniform, no static, and brew wonderfully. Now, my fresh ground beans have that bright fresh unlocked flavor that makes freshly ground beans desirable in the first place. Really can tell the difference.Gone are the days of the cheap and uneven and overheated grind of the “electric spice grinder” style grinder, which was so awful, it made all my beans taste terrible (bland yet bitter) due to overheated and uneven grinds. This is a wonderful compact tool to have in your coffee kit if you don’t need large batches, and want to sample whole bean coffee, an electric grinder that does the same quality grind without static mess would cost four times as much and be four times the size.extremely happy w the purchase.

Bought this for compact travel to nest with Aeropress

Works great, like the adjustability and pack ability. Skinny profile is easier to tip over than some of the shorter larger diameter versions. Squeaks sometimes when cranked.Updated, I have been using this grinder with my Aeropress almost every day since my purchase in December of 2018, so one and a half years. I’ve had no problems and the grind is consistent. I bought this model as I travel for months at a time with carry on only. The pictures show my kit (without handle, oops). I use an insulated GSI mug from REI. I marked the inside of the grinder to measure the beans. I only bring the upper grinder part without the lower part and grind directly into the Aeropress plunger or available container, a little awkward but not bad. I had to file/sand the plunger lip a little to get the Aeropress to fit in the GSI mug. Total kit is 16.6 oz. or a hair over a pound. When at home I use the complete grinder. For reference, I like a large cup of good black coffee. I use a medium grind (9 clicks CCW open from closed position), a stainless steel MESH from Corretto, 200 F water, 10 second stir and 1min 40sec sit time in the Aeropress. I use 2 tbsp or 12grams dark roast. The GSI holds almost 500 ml (2 cups). I use the Aeropress upside down as the mesh does leak water sometimes. I did experiment with time and grind size quite a bit before I settled on what I like. You may prefer different. The finer the grind the longer the cranking. Mine takes about 90 seconds for medium. My wife’s Haro grinder is easier to hold, smoother to crank and grinds about the same consistency but is much larger and heavier for the way we pack.

    JavaPresse vs Hario Slim Throwdown

Bought this grinder as a replacement for my Hario Mill Slim Grinder, which I woefully left behind while on vacation. This review will compare the two grinders, as it is my only frame of reference for a manual grinder.First of all, I LOVE how this looks. The two grinders are a bit different, aesthetically, but if you like stainless steel gadgets, this will fit your kitchen nicely. As with the Hario Slim, the grinder separates out into the chamber, the grinder, and the crank/handle (please note: I have very little experience with mechanical parts, so forgive me for using these words interchangeably). Unlike the Hario Slim, the JavaPresse’s crank is more reminiscent of a box wrench, while the Hario Slim’s crank is covered over by a knob. This is both a positive and a negative, depending on what you like. The JavaPresse’s crank can easily slip on and off the nut because of its design, while the Hario Slim’s cannot as easily slip-off (I have spent many mornings jimmying the crank off the Hario). If you’re one of those people who can muster the energy to grind their beans at lightning speeds, you might find yourself with the handle flying off the grinder. Not an issue with the Hario, but again, you run into the problem of trying to pry off the handle with that model. JavaPresse’s crank also cannot be stored as easily as the Hario’s because of its knob-less design. But that’s being nitpicky about the design. Let’s talk about beans. Anyway who prefers French Press coffee probably knows the woe that is manual grinders and its inconsistent coarse grind. The Hario Slim is awful at this. On the other hand, I wouldn’t say the JavaPresse’s coarse grind is perfect, but it’s a helluva lot better than the Hario’s. There will always be some leftover dust, but the JavaPresse has far less coffee grind dust than the Hario Slim’s. Medium/fine grind looks fine to me too.Overall, for the price this is an amazing grinder. If you’re looking into manual burr grinders that are both consistent and portable, I’d recommend this over the Hario Slim. This is going on my coffee & tea bar.

    Fantastic for the price

Loving this thing so far. Quieter and more consistent than either my spice grinder or my Mr. Coffee electric burr grinder. It is amazing how much effect a fine even grind has on the taste of the coffee. I got some decent Kona beans as a gift, and using a spice grinder produced an “Ok” brew, but using this and a nice fine grind produces a much more flavorful and complex cup. Its frankly a little shocking how much more impressive the beans were just by getting a decent grinder. Admittedly, it isn’t perfect, but I’d give it a solid 4.75/5. It can be a bit uneven with coarser grinds, so be aware if you are a French Press aficionado. Great on the fine side of things though. It can be a bit of a work out, taking maybe 1-2 minutes of grinding to get through a “dose” of beans. The handle can also be a little wobbly, as it the center rod just fits in a hole in the handle. Depending on how you hold it, the handle may come loose occasionally while grinding. Not a big deal, but again, something to be aware of.But for the price, it is a great little grinder. We’ll see what the life span is, but I’ve been using it several times daily all week, and haven’t noticed any wear and tear yet.And as a note, the center rod is pentagonal, but I have seen 3D printed adapters to use a hand drill with it for powered grinding. Haven’t tried it myself, but I’ll admit I’m curious.

Handy Grinder What I have Learned

I have had my Java Presse Manual Grinder for almost two months. I am a full time RV’er and enjoy the opportunity to apply my own energy to the grind process. Although there are less expensive grinders, I found this grinder to be so well made and quite reliable. Here are some tips that will help you enjoy your grinder as well as I have. During the first month I was disappointed in how slow it grinded. My son visited during Christmas and insisted on using an electric drill and not the supplied handle. Don’t do this as it grinds just a little faster but not much more than using the crank. And I also noticed that that fast spinning loosened the grind size adjustment nut. Believe me I was so upset because I had thought it was damaged. It was not. After Christmas I discovered that the speed of the grind process is dynamically increased by a very slow crank speed. I have found that a turn speed of two to two and one half seconds per turn results in faster results. Along with an occasional tap on the base will bring loose beans into alinement while grinding when you are near the end of a fill (this is mentioned in the videos which I recommend you should watch). And remember that using your grind soon after will result in a more flavorful cup because like many other organic products which loose some of those most volatile essences soon after processing. Grind right before use. Grind with a slow turn, it’s faster. Can you believe it?Then (not related to the grinders use) if you want the best coffee taste omit the use of additives i.e. cream and sugar etc. by reducing the amount of coffee until it suits your taste without additives. Many folks will perk a heavy load just for the effects of the caffeine and miss the true coffee enjoyment. If so use Folgers or grind a small amount and if there is a portion of the grind remaining seal in a small jar that is air-tight. One of the joys of retirement, slow down, live and enjoy. Buy beans from JavaPresse or another good supplier of very fresh beans for your best results. Please enjoy! My major complaint might be that it could be slightly larger for most homes. But for me, by myself, this grinder is more than adequate as it works very well. Five stars without question.

    I LOVE this little gadget

Bear with me. I’m really excited as I’m a newbie to coffee beans so excuse the rambling. I’ve been only using this grinder for about a week. This is my first manual grinder. Please. This is my very first grinder. I’ve gone from drinking instant Bustelo to Lavazza in a moka pot to now buying organic dark roast from Fairways. I will be traveling in a few weeks and was simply looking for something easy to pack (and use) as I’m going with steadfast faith to come in contact with a local personal or business roaster. Grinder arrived quickly as I am a prime member. I easily assembled the grinder which included finding the correct grind setting and I’m no pro. I read the preceding company email but I just forged ahead and put enough beans in to grind a single serving (not recommending this – I was excited). Read comments so knew this wasn’t going to be a very quick process. Didn’t even time it. I was in love with my beans from the first whiff. Yummmm. Meh, maybe 1.5 minutes. I don’t know. I don’t spin the crank but churn with love. Placed ground coffee in moka pot. I sipped that coffee , nursed the mug and my eyes rolled to the back of my head. YO! OH THE LIFE THAT IS AHEAD OF ME!! So now I’ve been using this daily. I love cranking it. It builds up my anticipation for coffee. Like the company email states: Your grinder is now ready for use anywhere in the world! Yeah!!!!! And I paid full price for this and have no affiliation to JavaPresse blah blah blah.

Sturdy, easy to clean. Perfect for small households with limited kitchen storage space.Grinding just the right amount of fresh coffee by hand has become an enjoyable part of my morning. I love my old 4-cup percolator but it needs a coarser grind than my cheapo electric grinder can produce. Filling the chamber of the JavaPresse all the way up produces just the right amount of coarse-ground coffee for four strong cups of perked coffee. It takes about two minutes to grind and is not difficult. I’m glad I spent a bit extra for this brand and not a knock-off. It’s very durable and I’m pleased I’ll be able to buy replacement burr when necessary — won’t have to replace the whole unit. The adjustment mechanism does indeed “click” when you turn it, but the levels are not marked. The manual suggests grinding a few beans and tightening or loosening as necessary. I found I quickly learned to _see_ the width of the opening that gives me the coarse grind I prefer, so I don’t need trial and error every time.If you like a fine grind I recommend starting with a coarse grind, tightening the mechanism, then regrinding. Otherwise it can be tiresome work. Some complain that it’s hard to get the beans into the hopper without spilling. I just cup my hand around the top so it acts as a funnel and spoon the beans in with a tablespoon. Problem solved.Be sure to give the grinder a shake every few turns to move the beans around — it makes the process faster.

    Great grinder, stellar customer service

I’ve been using this product for three months now, almost 5 days a week. While no product is perfect, for the $20 price tag, you would be hard pressed to find a better grinder. Throw in the amazing customer service, and you have a grinder that is unbeatable for its class. The tactile bumps on the adjustment wheel or “clicks” do help in dialing in an optimal grind. Difficulty arises, however, from the fact that the “clicks” are not linearly proportional to the spacing of the burr. For example, on a courser setting, a “click” of the adjustment wheel results in a quite dramatic increase/decrease in burr spacing versus a “click” when the grinder is set for a finer grind. While less than ideal, the grinder is still perfectly usable and the user, with time, can take the non-proportional clicks into account when making adjustments. The grind itself is way more consistent than anything you would expect from a common blade grinder. I haven’t used other burr grinders before so I can’t comment on which grinder, among the burr grinders, is best but I must say that I am very happy with the current results. They are definitely good enough for any common coffee brewing method, such as French press or pour over.In terms of components, the stainless steel exterior is quite durable and gives a nice sleek appearance. My biggest gripe initially was the plastic pieces which held together the burr assembly. After about 3 months of continuous use, my worst fears came true when one of the pieces cracked when I took apart the grinder for regular cleaning. While this was a negative experience, my interaction with JavaPresse’s customer service quickly made this a positive one. Not only did they send me a new grinder, they also sent me an upgraded replacement burr for my old one. How can you beat that? While I do which the burr assembly components weren’t made of plastic, the number of companies that I have dealt with which will stand behind their products to the extent that JavaPresse did is almost next to nothing. In summary, the coffee grinder works great and is an indispensable tool in my coffee making arsenal. Customer service from JavaPresse was also stellar. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this grinder.

    Great quality!

Compact grinder, quiet, good quality. If you are not used to a manual grinder, know that it does take time to grind the coffee. Minutes instead of seconds with an electric. But at least the manual one seems to have better quality over electric ones that don’t seem to last.

Love this item!! Easy to use & perfect grind!

Love this!! I needed something that would provide the perfect grind options for my coffee bean needs…-I am pretty new to French pressing and needed something easy to get a coarse grind-Separately my mom who’s at my house a lot prefers a finer grind for drip coffee- so I wanted something that was adjustableThis grinder is easy to adjust and clean for all of my needs! I find that filling it up to the top with beans provides the perfect amount of coarse ground coffee for my large first cup of French press coffee in the morning. It does take some arm/hand strength to grind and easier if you hold w/ both hands- so if you have any issues with gripping things it could be challenging. But for me I find it very fast and quiet- takes like <5m to grind. My 3yo likes to help too! Also, the beans can get stuck, but it’s not at all hard to take apart and fix. (I mean it- I am notoriously bad at this type of thing and found it easy)This is a very small item which can be good and bad. Positive: It is a cute and minimal stainless steel item so it looks pretty cool left out on a countertop; you can also easily put it away/fit it almost anywhere. Negative: if you want to make more than one cup of coffee at a time (like if you want to fill up a French press) you’ll have to fill up the container and grind multiple times. I don’t mind this at all but some might- for example my husband feels it’s all just too manual and prefers to do a K cup. To each their own I guess! 😂Anyway, I really enjoy this product and plan to give as a holiday gift to a few family members who love coffee as much as me!

Sleek, affordable, I like it, and/but…

My daughter graced me with a sweet cappuccino maker for Christmas (okay, I asked her for it— she’s a Google engineer, how could I not?) But you give a mouse a cookie… and the next thing you know, you need accessories: A burr grinder was called for, an affordable one (I am not a Google employee). This grinder was sharp-looking and—though manual— at the right price point. Here’s the skinny: It’s nicely engineered. As good looking in person as it is on the page. It’s not complicated. Put the beans in, turn the handle. it’s well made, so the casing will probably survive the sharpness of the blades, eventually. Then you can turn it into a pepper grinder. And when the revolution comes, you can still grind yer beans without electricity. Also, it’s made by a young entrepreneur, which we need more of, so I’m happy to encourage. But in my haste to get a good cuppa out of the new machine, I ordered this grinder quickly, without reading the reviews. (let me say here that I try at all costs to avoid putting one more cent in Jeff Bezo’s pocket, but I live in the outback with no speciality kitchen stores in a reasonable driving radius, and I was jonesing to try that coffee maker like nobody’s business). The downside of this grinder is that it takes 197 turns of the handle to get one cuppa coffee’s worth of ground beans. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. You probably burn a few calories, toning those batwing upper arms, and you feel like you’ve earned that cup in the end. It’s satisfying, in a baby-boomer, work-ethic kind of way. Electric burr grinders are bougie. But, just telling you. If you think you’re going to whip up a batch of lattes for the six friends you have over for brunch, you’re gonna have to get up a little earlier.

A great addition to my weekend coffee routine

During the work week, I typically use an electric grinder and a drip machine for my morning coffee. However, on the weekends I’ve started experimenting with different preparation methods like french press, moka pot, and pour over chemex. I’ve been reading that a burr grinder is the better way to go for extracting flavor from the coffee beans. So I went searching for a manual grinder to use on the weekends when I have more time to prepare coffee. I also wanted something that was easy to adjust for experimenting with the grind setting. The JavaPresse Manual Coffee Grinder has been a great addition to the morning coffee routine. It’s very easy to use and easy to adjust for the various grind settings. The grind seems to be consistent as I’ve figured out the settings I like the best. I watched the intro video on cleaning and the proper rotation for the grind so that it doesn’t mess up the grinder long term. It feels durable and seems like it will last a while. Overall, I’m glad I purchased the product.

First impressions on this coffee grinder.

…so I’ll share more as I learn more. I watched the “unboxing” video recommended on the insert inside the box and was happy to see that I could start using the product right away without the wash in hot soapy water that is recommended for other items. (I’ll watch cleaning videos later on.) First impressions: The packaging is gift-worthy. The device itself is beautiful, silver-colored brushed finish, length about 80% distance wrist to elbow, girth circle formed by middle finger and thumb, with a window to see how much coffee you’ve left to grind. The unboxing video explained that filling the container would make two cups of coffee. Can confirm. But did I hear the unboxing video say 1 cup of coffee beans would fit in the hopper? I don’t know how much variation there is in coffee bean sizes but I could only fit 1/2 cup Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, and that’s a LEVEL 1/2 cup. And yes, even with the smaller 1/2 cup amount, one is likely to spill a bean or two while transferring the beans from measuring cup to hopper. Since even mild annoyances are magnified in the early-morning pre-caffeinated state, I would recommend using a wide mouth funnel for this step of the process. The assembly process couldn’t be simpler, which makes it a great option for backpackers, but I managed to put the handle upside down onto the cap on my first attempt. The grinder actually worked that way, but it’s much easier and faster to use with the black knob on top so that it can rest in the hand. I had enough grinds for my very first cup in about a minute, assembly mistake notwithstanding.I love how quiet the grinder is, and I love the smell of the freshly ground coffee. I am happy to make this item part of my morning ritual.

DO NOT DO IT! SAVE YOURSELF!

UPDATE 11/20/2017After writing my initial review the Javapresse company reached out to me and sent me a brand new grinder free of charge. I have to say the original one I received must have been defective because the one that they sent over works great! I can pull an amazing shot out of it using my Gaggia espresso machine and it tastes great. I also purchased a grinder from another company here on amazon that looked the same as the JavaPresse however it seems to me that the JavaPresse actually grinds the beans faster at the same consistency. All in all I am very happy they reached out to me and now I can happily change my rating to a 5 star.!______________________________Incredibly disappointed with this product. When I received it the packaging looked great and I was really excited to start using it, seemed simple and easy enough to use. After putting in my coffee bean I noticed immediately something was wrong as the burr grinder would not spin. I removed the beans and tested it, and the burr grinder began to spin. So I added the beans back again and to no avail the grinder did not spin. I did this a couple of more times and then I simply added 1 coffee bean, that stopped the grinder from spinning as well.I then though well maybe it was assembled wrong, after inspecting the device further I noticed that the burr inside the grinder was not sturdy at all and moved all over the place, I am not sure how a grinder that has the burr moving so much could ever produce a consistent grind. However I can’t confirm this as I was not able to even grind 1 bean. Now ill have to order from a different company and won’t be able to enjoy my espresso for another 3 days, and for a coffee lover like myself this makes me furious, hence the one star review.

    Compact, Quiet, and Grinds Perfectly

love this Manual Stainless Steel Coffee Grinder! It’s super compact, so it doesn’t take up much space in my kitchen, and I can easily take it on the go. The stainless steel build feels sturdy, and it grinds my coffee beans perfectly—whether I’m brewing espresso or a regular drip. It’s much quieter than electric grinders, which is a plus in the morning when I don’t want to wake up anyone. The grind settings are easy to adjust, and cleanup is a breeze. Great value for a hands-on coffee experience!

    Perfection

I ordered this a little over a year ago with the intention of starting the “coffee snob” stage of my life, alongside a French Press. I figured I’d grab the manual grinder over an electric to add some “process” and “satisfaction” to my morning routine, what with grinding my own coffee. In the back of my mind, I figured I would eventually get tired of the constant daily grinding, and move on to an electric grinder.Well, as the days went on, this grinder did the job. I got faster grinding the beans, and it worked well for a while. But, after a year or so, it started skipping, getting stuck on beans. And finally, the little plastic pieces that created torque for the grinder gave out, and the thing was useless. I took that as my sign to get the electric grinder and save the hassle. I came full circle. 10/10 product.

    It Works!

After I retired I got a bright idea to grind the coffee for my daily cup of Cafe Cubano, which is a bit oversized from the typical demitasse cup.Going for the low effort option I initially got a well know brand electric coffee grinder. This was totally useless. I could hit the beans with a hammer and do a better job. It is now waiting for a yard sale!A few months later I decided to try again, and ordered a manual grinder. Looked great and had good reviews, but after loading it up with coffee beans I could barely crank it. Now, I’m pretty stong, and can hold my own with a chainsaw or rototiller but this was ridiculous. I even tried it with a few beans at a time. I love my morning coffee but not this much. I did find it to be the best pepper grinder I have ever used and think it will last forever in this role. Or at least longer than I do!Again, after months of frustration, because I know people manually grind coffee, why not me? I ordered this grinder. I was amazed!!!! Turning the crank is virtually effortless. It is not as fast and the electric grinder but the results is a grind similar to bought espresso coffee.Just setting down in the morning, grinding the coffee and relaxing is a great meditative experience at least for me. Anyway, if you want to manually grind your coffee beans fresh in the morning I can’t imagine a better device to assist in the endeavor.

    Don’t take it apart.

Recommended item. Works great. Will grind as fine as you need and fine enough for lever espresso machine. It is comfortable to use as you can grind vertical and horizontal. It works and does a great job and you can’t beat the price. And the receptacle that holds the coffee after it is ground fits into the portafilter so you can tap the coffee right into it. How smart! I like it and I have nothing negative to say about the machine. Keep in mind that it ain’t an electric machine so you will grind 14 grams of coffee in about 10 minutes or less.I do have something negative to say about the instructions which are a waste of time and so is the website video showing the dude that likes to listen to himself going on on on and wasting time. What needs to be shown clearly is: in what direction do the washers go when putting the machine back together after cleanning. Up or down? Can’t be seen clearly in the video or in the instructions that come with the unit. A waste of time trying to figure it out. There is a top washer that needs to be put back correctly either up or down and a bottom washer that also needs to be put back in the correct direction. The information provided is a waste of time. Also, some type of warning needs to be given so that no grinding is attempted in the zero position because seems to me-I don’t know-that the burrs can be worn down or damaged. If it doesn’t matter, hey, more to power you but I heard crunching in the zero position. It’s a great machine but Javapresse should have paid little more money an have gotten better qualified people to provide the instructions and the video on the machine. It ain’t rocket science to crank the handle but clear instructions would be helpful. But other than that, I personally like and recommend this unit.

JavaPresse manual – EASY to use – consistent grind – ADJUSTABLE!

I was a whole coffee bean grinding novice. I’m not anymore! First I bought an 8 cup, Veken French press coffee maker because it had 83%, 5 star reviews. So, in my opinion a very good choice as many of the more expensive and way more expensive ones had much lower ratings. Nowhere in the Veken description did it recommend using a coarse grind of coffee. As I bought a manual grinder on the same day I bought the French press, (without the benefit of doing any research – stupid me), and only after reading the French press literature and instructions that I should be using a coarse grind did I realize that I’d bought a highly rated grinder that couldn’t be adjusted. Also, I didn’t know any of this until I’d ground my first whole coffee beans EVER. Yes, the grind left quite a bit of silt in my cup, so, the research hunt was on for a good, dependable, ADJUSTABLE whole coffee bean grinder. I did hours of research at gourmet coffee sites that did NOT sell anything – they just really like good coffee and were very into coffees and also the equipment necessary to make GOOD coffee. One name popped up on all the sites I visited. And if the JavaPresse manual coffee grinder wasn’t their number 1 choice for a manual grinder, it was in their top 3. Those hours of research showed me that many professional coffee people have really good things to say about the JavaPresse Manual Coffee Grinder with Adjustable Setting – Conical Burr Mill & Brushed Stainless Steel Whole Bean Burr Coffee Grinder!!! Some things I can add to the research out there is that it is EASY to use – takes much less effort to grind the beans than the first one I bought – is easy to take apart to clean – and does a really beautiful consistent grind on everything but a really coarse grind (which is recommended for a French press coffee maker). BUT…and this is really important!, no manual grinder does a truly consistent coarse grind because you have to loosen the adjustment so much to do a coarse grind that the conical burr will wobble a little according to all the experts. Does it leave silt in my cup? Very little. Much much less than with the first grinder I used that couldn’t be adjusted. And not enough that I’d even have noticed had I not done so much research and watched video after video about manual coffee grinders. I am so happy with my JavaPresse Manual Coffee Grinder I can highly recommend it and can say unreservedly that you should buy it! ~ ~ ~ Deb

While this grinder is a lot like the others sold on Amazon for slightly cheaper

While this grinder is a lot like the others sold on Amazon for slightly cheaper. The old adage “Buy nice or buy twice” applies. I did a fine grind as tight as the screw would go and it could do espresso if you have the proper equipment. The grind was very fine and consistent with what I would think an espresso. Coarse setting was consistent with what I would use for French Press. The grinder suffers from the notorious “burr wobble” but thats EVERY grinder thats by hand. I can confirm that the grinder does sit in the AeroPress plunger without the handle. Its a nice fit and will work awesome when we go camping. the grinder isnt fully consistent compared to a machine one, but thats not a fair comparison. Its easy to adjust the grinder with the star nut and the clicks. I counted clicks from tight to loose and I counted 28. I am assuming 1 (where I started might be a espresso/turkish grind) and 28 (a very coarse grind) if you use that for French Press. I would use maybe 25 for french press because 28 had pieces of coffee bean not fully grounded.Altogether, the coffee freshly grounded tasted delicious and with a hand grinder the benefit is that you dont heat the coffee up so much where you lose flavor in a blade or really fast burr grinder machine. You just have to put a little arm work into it. A full chamber I would say would yield about 20-30 grams of coffee grounded (but thats my estimate)Here is what I REALLY liked. After 2 grinds, I was cleaning the burr out and I noticed the burr had a small chip in the ceramic. Quick email to JavaPresse and explained the issue. Within 30 minutes I had a new burr ordered and heading my way. Thats quality customer service. I am almost positive that the similar, yet cheaper grinders do not have this availability given where they are made, and who stands behind them.

Inexpensive, compact, reasonably quiet, it works.

I confess that I did have to watch one or two Youtube videos to make sure I knew what I was doing with this grinder. It seems like operating it should be an obvious and simple process, but it still helped me to watch their videos.By doing so I learned that I needed to turn the “setting” wheel all the way clockwise first and then counter-clockwise the desired number of clicks for my preferred grind, the number of which are listed on their website but are not included with the printed material.Even after arriving at the suggested number of clicks for a French Press, as I don’t have an electronic scale I had to do some more research to figure out the recommended amount of beans to put in the grinder. (With my electric blade grinder I would just eyeball it.) It turned out I need approx. 1/2 a cup of whole beans, and the top (whole bean) compartment doesn’t hold that much, so I had to do my grind in two batches. As some have noted grinding the beans “by hand” does take a while, but while it’s slower than my electric blade grinder, it’s also a lot quieter. If I was grinding more than half a cup of beans, I’d not want to use this particular grinder. That said, I was also going somewhat slow, and if I really cranked the handle it would have undoubtedly been a faster process. I will say the grind was a lot more uniform than with my blade grinder, the ground beans seemed more aromatic, and my cup of coffee tasted more flavorful. Or maybe I just appreciated it more because of the extra work I had to put in to make it 🙂

    Very Impressed

Don’t usually do reviews and I’m the usual 5 out of 10 reviewer 🙂 I did post this on my Facebook page after 3 days of use:”Well my Mr. Coffee coffee grinder that I have had for 20+ years finally gave it up. So I started to look around for a replacement. A lot of options out there now (not that many 20 years ago). I won’t say I’m a “coffee snob” but to some, maybe I am. I always grind my own and use my espresso maker for a 4 shot cup. I use Espresso, Italian, French roasts, and change pace with Guatemalan and Sumatra.I saw this one after reading a lot more in-depth articles on grinders. The best you can really get are the conical ceramic burr grinders, not the old blades I have been using. The burr process actually grinds the coffee beans in a consistent size and not heat up the beans like metal blades. So, I thought what the heck, and this one looked like fun and possibly the even size will be easier on my machine.WOW! First cup, I was amazed! Not sure it was just some sort of anticipation or not, so had a second cup, then switched to Sumatra for another cup! Yep, results were all the same. The even size and gentle grinding actually produced more body and flavor and took the bite/edge right off of the espresso roast. Karen (coffee hater) wasn’t sure to believe me, but I make an Americano for my grandson Saturday mornings, he even claimed the coffee was a lot smoother! If you start looking for a new grinder, I strongly suggest and know you won’t be disappointed using the Ceramic Conical Grinders. Worth the extra bucks!”

    It works quite well

I bought one of these a few years ago and used it for coffee which I rarely drank, herbal teas being more to my liking. It had worked well but since I rarely used it I put it away. For some reason I started having coffee in the morning earlier this year and when I tried to find the grinder I couldn’t so I bought another. The new has been working like a champ till it did what another reviewer noted, the burr twisted on so tight it wouldn’t break free. Contrary to some comments about not needing to be cleaned it does need to be cleaned fairly often. That is why it stuck, the burr had too much residue in it to do its job anymore and pretty much said, “Not grinding anything till you give me a bath mister.” No big deal, what doesn’t need a good cleaning here and there? So I did. It soaked for a day or two then totally dried out for several days and finally this morning, it had broken free. It is now awaiting a good cleaning. Then I’ll let it dry for a day or so before putting it back together. It will be back to its good old self before too long.By the way, i found the old one after the new one became stuck. The only difference between them is that the bottom half of the old one fits more tightly than the new one, but both do fine. The grinder is easy to use. You do have to practice a little at a time to get the size grind you want but that’s simple enough to do, a turn or two or three or… will get you what you want. It stores nicely in a drawer or wherever and is sturdy. All in all I am happy with this grinder, both of them. They work quite well.Just be sure to clean it here and there.

    Great Grinder for single cups

Since I am the only one in my house who drinks coffee, I almost exclusively make pour-over coffee; mostly with a Hario v60 or an Aeropress. Store-bought grinds are mediocre at best, and only produce decent cups immediately after the bag has been open (if that). I have a Cuisinart electric burr grinder, but that produces inconsistent grinds that has made it difficult to dial-it-in when it comes to producing a good cup. I was looking at getting a more expensive burr grinder but realized that the cost does not justify the use for two cups a day. So, I researched manual grinders and decided on this one: The Javapresse. I have never used a manual grinder. Upon unboxing, I was impressed by its look and sturdiness. I looked online for more detailed instructions about how to adjust the settings. I tried out several “clicks”– it appeared to me that 8 clicks or so was more like store-bought grounds. I made my first cup at 5 clicks — slightly finer. In my test run, the thing that stood out the most was the consistency of the grind. This is critical for a good cup. The Javapresse is way more consistent than my Cuisinart. Way more. I believe the manual nature of turning the level helps maintain that consistency. Electric grinders move way too fast, thus allowing different sized coffee through. This is manual. It does require some elbow grease, so to speak. 20 grams of coffee took about a minute or so to grind. And a minute may not seem like much here in print, but spinning the handle for a minute seems like an eternity. No worries. I had the water heating on the stove, watched some tv and all was good.I am not sure this would be the best product for large pots of coffee; the grinder isn’t that large. It would have to be done in several batches. This is perfect for smaller brews, though. Perfect. My pour-over coffee is now more consistent and flavorful as a result of this grinder. And the great thing is: I can easily take it with me when we travel or go camping. Highly recommended.

    Consistently Good Coffee, Conveniently Sized

I was tired of drinking mediocre coffee, so I recently decided to do some research and invest in some quality equipment. I came across this JavaPresse in a few professional reviews, and since I only make coffee for myself, this manual coffee grinder was the perfect size for me. It’s small—it holds about 2 cups’ worth of coffee grounds—but if you have a small space, then the size is compact and easy to stow. When it arrived and I opened the box, there was a paper with simple instructions and a web link to watch setup and cleaning videos, making it really simple to get started using it. I use 4 tbls. of beans to make 16 oz. of pour over coffee, which takes about 3 minutes to grind with the hand crank, and it’s not a workout, so it grinds really well and produces very consistent grounds. All of the pieces come apart, so getting the ground coffee out is fast and simple, as is cleaning. Let me tell you, this grinder made a HUGE difference in the flavor of my coffee, and I will never go back to a blade grinder! If you’re looking for speed in the morning or plan on brewing more than two cups at once, you’ll probably want an electric burr grinder (be ready to spend a lot more money, though). But if you’re like me and only brew one cup at a time, want a quiet start to the day, and appreciate the process of making that perfect cup, start to finish, or if you are looking for a good portable grinder, then I highly recommend this JavaPresse manual grinder!

Great buy for a lot of work

I am a big fan of the JavaPresse Manual Stainless Steel Coffee Grinder because it will grind the coffee bean to what you like. It is all manual and you will have to work to get enough coffee grounds to get enough for 1 cup of espresso. I like my coffee grounds fine and I can spend up to 4 to 6 minutes hand grinding enough been for 1 cup. If you do not want to work in the morning for fresh coffee grinds than I do not recommend you buying it for home. The JavaPresse Manual Stainless Steel Coffee Grinder is great for traveling, camping trips or going somewhere remote.

Consistent grind, Better flavor than blade grinder

I bought this hand grinder to use in case of a power outage. But since I first tried it out, I can’t stop using it. the coffee flavor from a burr grinder is so much better than a blade type. Wish I had gotten it sooner.
